The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) issued a statement on 27 October 2026 warning of a major humanitarian situation in Moyale, Marsabit County.
Approximately 40,000 people (some UNHCR estimates around 36,000) fled unrest and clashes on the Ethiopian side of Moyale (linked to community tensions, an administrative dispute, and the killing of a 13-year-old girl). More than 15,000 are in eight temporary shelters (including St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Harhosha Secondary School, Manyatta Burji, Sessi, and Lanzi Mosque Hospital); over 20,000 are staying with relatives and friends.
Challenges: Severe pressure on food, clean water, shelter, sanitation, and healthcare. Four women gave birth at the sites. Ongoing rains raise risks of disease outbreaks. KNCHR called for urgent, rights-based response by national and county governments, UNHCR, IOM, Kenya Red Cross, and other partners, stressing the principle of non-refoulement and Kenya’s constitutional and international obligations.
